CLOSE TO THE BEST ASSASSIN’S CREED HAS EVER BEEN I bought this game way back when but didn’t get around to playing it for a couple of years. Then they started remastering entries, and there were always rumors that a Black Flag remake was just around the corner. Having experienced Resynced, and finding the gameplay fundamentally unsatisfying, I finally returned to this game and remembered why I love this franchise so much. POSITIVES: +Gameplay+ The game has the original power fantasy style gameplay. Enemies are quick and easy to dispatch, especially with the best weapons that you can acquire by early mid-game. You get to board a ship and John Wick everybody on board in mere seconds. I find it incredibly satisfying to wade into a crowd of enemies and be surrounded by their bodies after what looks like a montage of cool moves. Like the modern entries, the lack of challenge is an issue, but at least there’s speed and spectacle to keep you going. As for the naval gameplay, it is very much the same. By mid-game you will be dispatching enemy vessels at speed, and you will be able to take on fleets of enemies and send them to Davy Jones’ locker quickly. It is beautiful to see your ship engaged with the enemy in the middle of a storm and both of you vying for position in surprisingly rapid gameplay, while the ships still have a sense of weight. The only criticism, apart from a general lack of challenge, I have is that the enemy AI is a bit subpar, but the fights are over so quick, you could forget they are there. Stealth is a bit more satisfying, given the diversity of approaches, while the parkour is fun, though at times very imprecise. +Presentation+ Not much to say. The locations are beautifully designed and there’s a real sense of freedom on the ocean. Greatly appealing to the eye are the clear waters of the Caribbean and the storms. Overall, the art direction is pretty much impeccable, especially if you consider the age of the game. +Graphics+ Something wonderful about experiencing this title so many years later is that even on a mid-range system, it looks beautiful. Since the textures are compact and temporal anti-aliasing is non-existant, your PC can apply computationally heavy technologies like MSAA 4x with ease, while you still keep the max framerate. I wish we could have an opportunity for unlocked framerates, but they are not really necessary given the ease of the game and the lack of many challenges to player reflexes. +Music+ I put about fifty-two hours into the game, and I still love the work Brian Tyler has put into its soundtrack. At no point did a theme get old, and no matter how many ships I would take down in succession, the boarding track would get me pumped every time. I find it very pleasing, when a game’s score manages to walk the balance of being unobtrusive for such a long period of time, while at the same time being able to underline the important moments, so that their impact is enhanced. NEUTRALS: =Story= I like that we have a story in Assassin’s Creed about a character who is imperfect and has to fight for a road to personal redemption despite his own obstinance. Edward goes through so much and is still desperately clinging to his dream, not able to see how much he loses along the way. Sadly, the story suffers from a limited duration. Losses of people important to the plot and the protagonist are not felt as strongly as they should be, since we don’t spend much time with those characters, and some moments lose a lot of their intended poignance because of that. Even so, a great ending solved this issue for me. Still, I wouldn’t put this story with greats such as that of Assassin’s Creed 2 or Revelations. The modern day advances the story that began in Liberation. With disaster averted in Assassin’s Creed 3, we get a better picture of how the struggle between the main factions evolves, and we get more insight into the looming threat of what Desmond’s decision in AC3 unleashed. The gameplay in the modern sections might have been dissatisfying, but they did push the story forward in spite of their brevity. =Locations= The game suffers from its demand to have a large open map. In order to accommodate our pirate adventure, there have been many tiny islands, coves, caves and forts designed, but they are fairly similar and offer very little in the way of parkour locations or diverse kill approaches. The only real location on the scale of older entries is Havana. NEGATIVES: -Monetization and Online Elements- The only really vexing elements in the game have been the ones that were related to extending its monetization. This was the first AC title to really lean into monetizing the game, and you can tell by the way some of the collectibles are laid out that they really wanted you to go for those time saver packs. The Kenway Fleet element is basically the mini-game where you send off Assassins on missions, which we’ve had since Brotherhood, but this time it’s ships. The problem is that it runs via an online service to this day, and due to an outage of said service, I had four days, where I was done with the rest of the game and was just logging on to see if everything was back up, just so I could finish my 100% completion run. All of this is completely unnecessary, since the same mini-game is available in Rogue completely offline and with a much better UI and skip battle mechanic. The multiplayer experience, which I only engaged with to get some achievements is mostly dead and the absence of players is even more of an issue, since you can no longer invite other players to groups. I gathered people that wanted to get the achievements, and the only way we could do it was to search for a particular game mode’s public list and hope that the game drops us in together. While I enjoyed the rest of the game, the twelve and a half hours it took to get the multiplayer achievements were more akin to a two-hand prostate exam than entertainment. CONCLUSION: This is one of my favorite Assassin’s Creed games. The original style gameplay has been polished to almost its peak before the evolution of Unity and its successors. The only better game for an OG experience is Rogue, since you get a couple of more tools and New York to run around in. Still, I enjoyed my time with the game, and time permitting, I would love to replay it some day. It is definitely worth the price and it’s a steal on sale.

LIXO.

With 200 hours clocked and 100% of the achievements unlocked, I can confidently say Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a masterpiece of an open-world pirate game, even if it's trapped in some archaic Ubisoft design choices. The Great Voyage (The Good) Unparalleled Naval Combat: Sailing into open seas during a storm on full mast remains unmatched. The legendary ship battles are easily the most challenging and exhilarating parts of the game. Edward Kenway's Tale: Edward is a genuinely likeable, tragic, and complex protagonist. His journey through a beautiful world of ruins, cities, and vibrant sunsets holds up remarkably well visually. Swashbuckling Gameplay: Dual-sword combat and multi-shot pistols make the standard AC loop feel badass. The depth of ship upgrades, Kenway's gear, and unlockable outfits with gameplay buffs provide a highly rewarding progression loop. Lost at Sea (The "Eh") Balance Issues: The Jackdaw eventually becomes a floating god. Vaporising a level 60 Man-o'-War in 20 seconds flat completely removes the late-game danger. Dated Design: The UI looks older and clunkier than Assassin's Creed III. Also, the relentless abundance of clunky trailing missions will test your sanity. Dropping Anchor (The Bad) The 100% Completion Tax: Hunting down every tiny treasure chest across the ocean is suicidally mind-numbing. Having to jump off your ship, swim to a tiny island, grab a chest, and swim all the way back hundreds of times is peak design padding. Immersion Killers: The modern-day Abstergo storyline completely kills the pacing, the crew recruit gimmick feels completely half-baked, and the mandatory board games are awful. A Final Warning on Ownership: A Ubisoft executive famously stated that gamers should get more comfortable “not owning” their games. It has made the popular internet axiom ring truer than ever: “If buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing.” It’s a phrase that would definitely make Edward Kenway smile. Verdict: Despite the completionist fatigue and the outdated Ubisoft tropes, I am still inexplicably drawn back to this ocean. It is a mandatory play for anyone who loves high-seas adventure, but please be wary of your purchase given the publisher's stance on digital longevity.

A solução?

Played a few hours of this game, uninstalled it and didn't touch it until a year later. Can't recover ubisoft account that was linked to the game. Can't link a new ubisoft account to the CD key. Can't play a game on steam that I paid for. ♥♥♥♥ Ubisoft and their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ launcher. Never buy a Ubisoft game. Give me my refund, Steam. (Edit: this game inspired me to pirate the Resynced version. Keep the money, you dogs.)

One of my favorite AC games. Edward's story is still one of my favorites, and sailing around with the Jackdaw never gets old. Bugs? They're still hanging around. Nothing game-breaking though, just the "usual". A true classic. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
