Fallout: New Vegas - Honest Hearts

1 / 7

An expedition into the unspoiled wilderness of Utah's Zion National Park goes horribly wrong when your caravan is ambushed by a tribal raiding band. As you try to find a way back to the Mojave you become embroiled in a war between tribes and a conflict between a New Canaanite missionary and the mysterious Burned Man. The decisions you make will determine the fate of Zion. Key features

New Terrain: Navigate the highs and lows of the steep canyon walls, caves, riverbeds, waterfalls and explore the lush landscapes and rugged terrain in beautiful and sprawling Zion Canyon.

New Enemies: From the deadly Yao Guai and exotically lethal Greek Geckos to new hostile tribals, Zion Canyon is as dangerous as it is beautiful.

New Perks and Weapons: Survive the wild with Tribal Wisdom or exact increased damage with Eye for Eye. Honest Hearts offers a host of new perks and weapons including the .45 Auto Pistol, .45 Auto Submachine Gun, the Compliance Regular, Fire Bombs, War Clubs, and Yao Guai Gauntlets.

This DLC felt really fast but it was very good. Joshua Graham carried the whole thing and has literally turned Atheists into Christians. 10/10

This one is short and sweet. The environment looks really nice, and switches it up a bit from the main game. The two Mormon characters are both interesting, one in particular is incredibly cool, and the dilemma between them sets up for some interesting choices that are more than just binary. The most irritating thing is the prevalence of animals on the map. They practically swarm you wherever you go and I don't know about you guys, but fighting wildlife is the least interesting thing ever. Also, the childlike Native American archetype feels a little patronizing and that stupid accent gets tiresome after a while. Although I see the parables they tried to work in. Don't miss the Father in the Caves! *wink*

not sure why everyone loves this dlc. maybe its the desert ranger armor but in my opinion its great if you have repairing mods that fix crashes but its a somewhat fun dlc and you can go back to zion after you finish the dlc just like lonesome road!

Joshua Graham is the best Cristian in fiction and also RIP Randal Clark, at least his armor and gun are cool.

Probably the one DLC I won't be replaying. I'll give it some props, the opening was great. There was some great worldbuilding linking back to fallout 2 and 1 (I'm pretty sure you can find Happy Trails caravans in The Hub), John Deathjaw was cool and I liked how it all linked back to the debate surrounding Caeser's legion. Tripping balls and fighting a flaming bear was also pretty cool. There was also a pretty good atmosphere throughout, what with the rain and the calmness of Zion in comparison to the rest of the Mojave. The theme of rebirth, especially through Graham as a whole and the final battle through a river alluding to baptism was great, if a little drawn out. These guys know how to make setpieces. However, it's all downhill from there. It's pretty fetchquesty in nature, and I got bored picking up random knicknacks for Daniel and Graham. I was pretty disappointed with meeting Joshua Graham. Maybe it's cause I'm an Atheist, but he was a bit too self aggrandizing for my liking. Which brings me to the main problem of the DLC. The game itself understands the problems of having a "civilized land" that blows eachother up with nukes and energy weapons, so why was this included? This probably comes down to the inspirations of the DLC, and you can see echoes of it throughout. The tribes each being lead by a foreign visitor who is seen as greater, the one tribe that isn't are the villains of the story, painted as murderous fiends. To me it reads as imperial justification for wiping out natives, as seen in one of the endings. It's kill or be killed, essentially. So yeah, it's possible I'm overexaggerating. Having played fallout 1 and 2, there are somewhat similar paintings of tribals in those games aswell. Either way, the fact that this game unironically says "The tribe's main weapon is a submachine gun" is pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hilarious.

Honest Hearts is honestly really only liked because of Joshua Graham, from what I feel like, and yes, he is a wonderful character (and a wonderful Christian role model too), and while Zion National Park is a beautiful world, the whole campaign is...fine at best. Zion is a very linear map that kinda loses the spectacle when you get into the missions and dealing with the tribes. It's a passable DLC, but not one that I find too exciting in hindsight. I give it a thumbs up, but it's more of a sideways thumb.
