Genuinely amazing game that for the most part stands the test of time... except for the final boss fight that ♥♥♥♥ was terrible designed even for the era. 9/10

#TeAmoValve

Ignore my playtime hours, but I've played this game so much on other accounts. I got it on this account because the CD key from the original PC release still worked! Props to Valve!

A staple in gaming history, the predecessor and building block for a lot of today's games. I won't go over much in this review, but I will talk about my experience as of today and some great years ago. Half-Life was one of my first experiences with multiplayer, and I have loved it ever since. The gameplay was great, the weapons were diverse and fun to play around with, the movement was clean, and the community was awesome. I finished a playthrough in 2026, and it was as cool as I remembered. The environment and levels still hold up, enemies are diverse and have cool concepts (some are pretty spongy when they shouldn't be), sound design is incredible (when it works as intended), shooting feels good, and the story is simple but well told. It's fun from the beginning to the end, always switching up its setting and presenting you with new and different enemies (up until the last few moments where it gets a bit dull). New areas can sometimes be frustrating to fight through since they are really difficult to clear when you don't know the position and numbers of the enemies you are facing, with health being pretty hard to manage at times, forcing a trial-and-error kind of approach. Puzzles were simple but engaging, navigation was sometimes not very clear, but you always knew if you were going in the right direction, and bosses were underwhelming but worked. I look forward to diving into the remaining titles of this franchise.

The best game of the 1990s, and the one that changed shooters forever. Playing it in 2026, the mechanics don't surprise you anymore. They became the standard a long time ago. What does impress me is that almost everything we take for granted today was invented here, nearly thirty years back. It opens with a tram ride through Black Mesa. A few minutes where you can do nothing but look around, and in that time the game shows you the entire facility and lays out its rules. After that the camera never leaves Gordon Freeman: no cutscenes between chapters, no change of perspective. The story is told through talking NPCs, half-heard conversations between scientists and guards, and announcements over the PA. It makes the whole thing feel like one continuous piece. It runs 8–10 hours, and the pacing is nearly flawless. You start with a crowbar and a pistol against small enemies, and the arsenal keeps growing alongside them. The marines deserve their own mention. They flank you, throw grenades into your cover, fall back under fire and call out to each other. An enemy that behaves like an enemy instead of a target was a revelation in 1998, and it still reads that way. A few chapters were rough. "On A Rail" dragged the most, with endless track switches and no clear sense of where you're headed. "Surface Tension" was the hardest to fight through, with open ground and nowhere to hide. And "Residue Processing" strips every weapon off you and sends you through machinery that wants you dead. Quicksaves kept me from losing my temper entirely. The weak spot is the final stretch. The story effectively stops with a few hours left, and what remains leans on platforming and a last fight that tests patience more than imagination. A shame, because up to that point the setting works. Black Mesa feels like an actual laboratory, with vents, storage rooms and offices, rather than an arena built for killing things. For a game from the last century that's genuinely impressive. I hit exactly one bug, during a scripted sequence where you're being carried somewhere: the level transition broke and I fell straight through the floor. Everything else ran clean. The graphics show the game's age, and that's fine. I came for a game from the late 90s, not for the visuals. Half-Life is worth your time if the history of the genre interests you and dated graphics don't bother you. The story and the way it's told haven't aged at all, and that's the part that ages slowest of all.

A game that makes you surprisingly fond of headcrabs... It's an old game, of course there is plenty of jank to it, but I think it's level design really stands out even against modern games. You're always moving forward into unique areas with little secrets and new ways to go about the combat within them. I found myself really fond of a lot of the old paintings used for the textures, especially in the last zones. Sadly, I also kinda hated anything with jumping, but that might be a skill issue.
